Galaxy S5 AMOLED Display tested in the lab

Galaxy S5 is the Best performing Smartphone display that Displaymate ever tested

If you think Samsung Display use the same AMOLED Display with Diamond pixel matrix like the S4 just a bit bigger. NO YOU ARE WRONG! The Galaxys S5 OLED from Samsung Display was tested on a extensive lab tests and measurments. And the conclusion is that this OLED is the best smartphone display the lab ever tested.

Why?

The Display has improved the brigthness, lowest reflectance, Highest color Accuraacy, Infinite contrast ratio, smallest brigthness variation with Viewing Angle, Highest Contrast rating in Ambient light!

The S5 has a Full HD resolution 1920×1080 Pixel resolution like the Galaxy S4. Our industry insider thinks that later this year we will see a Galaxy S5 Premium/Prime with 2.5K 2560×1440 pixels.
But resolution is one thing, there are many other things that are very important for a perfect display!
So Samsung Display decide to improve not the resolution but the korean company improved many other important things.

Improved Brightness

The result of the brightness are really amazing, the S5 are more than 22 percent brighter than the Galaxy S4 OLED and 13 percent more than the Galaxy Note 3. The display provide 400 cd/m² which is higher than most LCDs. So the problem that you can not read anything in direct sun light is not a argument any more. Another key factor is the very low screen reflectance which helps to improve the effective screen brightness in direct sunlight. At high ambient light and with automatic brightness the display can reach 698 cd/m²!!!!! This is 47 percent more than the S4 Display. This is the brightest display for smartphones that the lab have ever tested!

Power Efficiency

Another key factor for a good display is also the power efficiency, so you read about new records about the brightness. The big question is but how many energy does the display need for that?
22 percent more brigthness but the S5 need the same power like the S4. And there is another thing the display is 4 percent larger! Which are 27 percent improved power efficiency over the S4. The S5 need for the same brightness 18 percent less power than the Galaxy S4. There is also the Ultra Power Saving Mode that lowers the brightness and set the background to black. Because OLED has no backlight black on the display you need no energy. With this mode you can double the running time on battery. If we compare that kind of technical facts that means that the S5 is 27 percent more power efficient than a LCD Display also with Full HD resolution and different content.

Viewing Angle Performance

The viewing angle is also very important because the customer hold the display at a variety of viewing angles.
The S5 has a much smaller 22 percent decrease in brightness at 30 degree viewing angle. A LCD display loses 55 percent of brightness at a 30 degree viewing angle. Also the color shifts with viewing angle are very small.

Picture/content Quality

The S5 has some different mode that you will enjoy your content.
You can choose between Adapt Display, Professional Photo, Cinema!
The S5 cinema mode has the most accurate colors that the lab have ever measured. If you choose the cinema mode the ambient light should be low so this mode is for indoor. If you choose the adapt display mode you can enjoy the applications with different white point, color gamut, and color saturation based on the image content. The Adapt Display mode has a very high color saturation! The professional Photo mode simulate the Adobe RGB Gamut which is 17 percent larger than Standard SRGB.The Adobe RGB Gamut will be used also in high-end digital cameras.

Diamond Pixels Pixel Matrix

The S5 and S4 pixel matrix hast the Diamond Pixel Matrix instead of Pentile. Every Sub-pixel have different sizes the reason is the organic material. Green organic material has the smallest size because this material has the highest efficiency. This alignment reduce aliasing and artifacts and suggest to improve the pixel per inch.

Samsung Display confirmed the results of the lab!

Samsung Display confirmed the results of the lab and showcased the advantages in their blog in new graphics.
Samsung says that the S5 has a brightness from 351 cd/m² the Note3 310 cd/m² and the Galaxy S4 287 cd/m².
Samsung Display confirmed also major improvement in direct sunlight outdoor using. If you use the S5 in direct sunlight the display can achieve a brightness from about 698cd/m². Samsung Display also confirmed that the S5 use the Diamond Pixel Sub-Pixel Matrix to achieve 432 ppi.
The Display Power efficiency is also a major point for the user, for the first time the S5 has a better power efficiency than a LCD Display with the same size. If we compare the S4 against the S5 you will get a improvement from about 27 percent.
